Meet Dr. Demoruelle: A New Voice in Denver RheumatologyMeet Dr. Demoruelle: A New Voice in Denver Rheumatology

Denver Arthritis Clinic is excited to welcome Dr. Kristen Demoruelle to our team this June. Dr. Demoruelle brings more than a decade of academic medicine experience, including research and clinical care at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, along with a deep commitment to patient-centered rheumatology. She has special expertise in women's health, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune-associated lung disease.

We sat down with Dr. Demoruelle to learn more about her background, her approach to care, and what drew her to DAC.

What drew you to rheumatology as a specialty?

I was drawn to rheumatology because it sits in that space where medicine is both a science and a puzzle. Many of the conditions we take care of are not straightforward. You have to listen closely, look at the whole person, and take the time to put the pieces together. I also really value the long-term relationships we build with patients. I find it very rewarding to help patients navigate their often complex autoimmune disease and partner with them to find ways to feel better and live more fully.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

I see patient care as a partnership. I bring the medical side, making sure we're asking the right questions, doing the right workup, and using evidence-based treatments, and my patients bring their experiences, priorities, and goals. From there, we work together to choose a plan that's effective and also fits their life.

Are there specific conditions or areas of rheumatology you're especially passionate about?
I have a special interest in women's health within rheumatology, particularly helping patients navigate pregnancy planning, managing rheumatic disease during pregnancy, contraception choices, and decisions around menopause and hormone therapy. I also focus on rheumatoid arthritis, from early diagnosis to long-term management, including RA-associated lung disease.

What should patients expect during their visits with you?

Patients can expect a thoughtful and thorough approach. I take time to understand each patient's symptoms, perform a detailed evaluation, and make sure we order the appropriate tests to get to the correct diagnosis. From there, I focus on using evidence-based treatments and tailoring a plan that works well for each individual patient.

What do you enjoy most about working with rheumatology patients?

What I enjoy most is the opportunity to improve people's day-to-day lives. Many rheumatologic conditions are chronic and can feel overwhelming or unexpected, and being able to help patients through that, whether it's getting a diagnosis, finding the right treatment, or just helping them feel more like themselves again, is incredibly meaningful. I also appreciate that every patient is different, and it keeps me thoughtful and flexible in how I approach care.

Are there emerging therapies in rheumatology that excite you?

There have been so many exciting advances in recent years. We now have a growing number of treatments that work in different ways, which means we have more options than ever before. What's especially exciting is that we're moving toward a more personalized approach, where we can better match the right medication to the right patient. In women's health, there's also been a lot of progress around pregnancy. We now know that many treatments can be used safely and that keeping disease well controlled during pregnancy is key to the health of both mom and baby.

What makes you excited to join Denver Arthritis Clinic?

I'm really excited to join because of the people and the shared approach to care. It's a group of thoughtful, compassionate providers and staff who are truly patient-centered, and that really resonates with me. After many years in academic medicine, I'm also looking forward to focusing on patient care in a community setting and being part of a team that makes such a meaningful impact in people's day-to-day lives.

What do you enjoy outside of medicine?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two young kids and taking advantage of everything Colorado has to offer, especially skiing, hiking, and biking. I also love exploring new places, trying new things, and checking out new restaurants.
